When can I find out more information about the program?
The county wide Specialty Programs information sessions were held in October, 2016 at the Kelly Leadership Building. There will also be an open house at Rippon on January 5 th beginning at 6:30PM.(Snow makeup dateis January 9 6:30 - 7:30).
What should incoming 6th graders expect?
All accepted sixth grade math and science students will be placed in either Math 6 extended or Math 7 extended. Placement of these classes is determined by 5th grade math SOLscores. Math 7 extended placement is determined by a placement test given in July or August. Students who qualify for placement testing will receive a letter in July.
Can rising 7th and 8th grade students apply?
StudentsCAN apply to the program during their 6thand 7th grade year!Announcements will begin to be made in November. Applications will be due on February 1st and accepted students will be enrolled into the program for thefollowing school year. It is actually quite common to havestudents use their 6th gradeyear as a transition year to "get the hang of" middle school. Rising 7th and 8th graders willhave the same entrance requirements as rising 6th graders. If they are a 7th grade student, they must be in Math 7 extended during their 7th grade year, meet SOL requirements, and have theirmathematics or science teacher fill out a satisfactory teacher recommendation form.Rising8th graders must be going into Algebra I in order to apply for the program.
What are the requirements of theprogram once Iam at Rippon?
Upon acceptance into the program, each student will sign a contract that will be maintained for three years.
Earn aminimum score of a "C"in all classes except for Extended Math and Science, where you must maintain a "B" average.
Be well behaved (earna minimum of "satisfactory"in conduct) in each class
Be willing to work hard (earn a minimum of "satisfactory" inwork habits) in each class
Must meetcontract SOL scores each year
All students must participate in the Science fair
Failure to meet these standards will result in probation. Uncorrected problems will result in dismissal from the program. Dismissed students may not re-apply for the program. Transferstudents removed from the program must go back to their base school the next school year.
